New Year Starts with Spikes in Unemployment
FIRST REPORTED 3:00pm 3/16/12 The first unemployment report of 2012 is out, and it shows the first month of the year was not kind for local statistics.

The statistics supplied Thursday by the Illinois Department of Employment Security indicate the January jobless average for all of Knox County shot up 1.2 points from December, to 9.7%.

In just the City of Galesburg, the rate went up eight-tenths of a point to 9.8%.

In all of Knox county, 2,500 were listed in January as unemployed -- up over 300 from December.

Warren County's shot upward, too -- up to 8.9% percent in January compared to seven-point-three percent in December.

The combined Galesburg-area unemployment average went up to 9.8%.

And other area counties saw sharp spikes, too. Henderson County's unemployment rate went up 2-1/2 points to be back in double digits at 10.1%.

Henry County's rate went up a point-and-a-half to 9.5%, and Mercer County's went up a whopping three percentage points to 12.5%.

Most unemployment rates in the immediate area went up compared to January of 2011, but the state still touts that unemployment rates dropped in five metro areas in the state.

The January figures, officials say, are not seasonally-adjusted.
