Schilling Encourages Participation in Local Farm Bill Hearing
A local Congressman says he hopes there's one particular concern that comes up at a field hearing on the 2012 Farm Bill to be held later this week in Galesburg.

17th District Republican Bobby Schilling of Colona is on the House Agriculture Committee that's holding a series of four field hearings on the Farm Bill. He says he's concerned farmers are getting over-regulated, especially at the hands of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Schilling tells the WGIL Morning News he knows the EPA doesn't get what they're doing to farmers.

"We had the head of the EPA, [Administrator Lisa P.] Jackson...she came out," Schilling said. "They're trying to force the farmers to wear dust masks. One of the questions to her was, 'Hey, do you have any idea how much these cost?' She says, 'No, I don't.' The Representative said, 'So, you don't know if they're $50, $500, or $5,000?' She says, 'No.' But that's what continues to happen in Washington."

Schilling says he believes more regulations means more costs to farmers, meaning the costs for the items they sell goes up.

He says he also hopes for the passage of a long-term farm bill this time around, versus the extensions of recent years.

The Farm Bill hearing is Friday at 9am at Carl Sandburg College Building F.
