Resolution Supporting Women Not Universally Supported
The Galesburg City Council likes the idea of naming city facilities after women who have been important in the city's history -- well, at least most of them do.

The Council voted seven-to-one Monday night in support of the resolution. Mayor Sal Garza recently formed a committee that came up with list of around 40 women who've had an impact on the city's 175 year history.

But that lone no vote came from Third Ward Alderman Russell Fleming.

"We're basically discriminating against men if you're re-naming things like Custer Park," Fleming said. "All other facilities, the W.C. Jackson Bridge, the Erickson Conference Room-- that's what the resolution is saying re-naming."

"Again, I just think it's a silly resolution that shouldn't have even been brought up."

Fleming says the city council and the city as a whole can support women important to the city's history without having a resolution do it anyway.

Galesburg Mayor Sal Garza took offense to that, saying it only supports re-naming, and doesn't actually re-name anything, and any re-namings will be back before aldermen anyway.
