Galesburg Gets a Half-Marathon
The City of Galesburg will soon host a sporting event it hasn't had before, but will, thanks to several local businessmen.

The Galesburg City Council Monday approved using 14 miles of downtown and other city streets for a half-marathon, five-K race, and one-mile kids fun run June 3rd. Nick Pigg -- co-owner of "Go Outside and Play" on Seminary Street is putting together the race, along with Dave Dunn, owner of Dave's Auto Body and Masters Educational Services.

Pigg tells the WGIL Morning News the race will be professionally run.

"It's gonna be a fun event with a lot of bands, and a professional timing company, and a lot of fun stuff that will happen," Pigg said.

That's in addition to the expertise of runner organizers have called on to make sure this first-ever race is done right.

Pigg says the route for what's being called the "Half-Marathon Express" wasn't easy to come up with, but otherwise is interesting if you anything about the city's road system.

"All of it starts and ends right here in downtown Galesburg," he said. "And we got 13.1 miles without crossing train tracks, which is easier said than done."

Pigg and Dunn say chances are money won't be made on the race at least this year, but believes the effects on tourism and downtown Galesburg are priceless.

Registration is available on line at getmeregistered.com, with an official race website coming soon.
