Elementary Teachers Takes Home Annual Chamber Hardware
One Galesburg teacher didn't need a hall-pass as she bolted back to school Wednesday afternoon from a luncheon put on by the Galesburg Area Chamber of Commerce.

Nielson Elementary's Jenny Bredemeier was presented with the chamber's 2012 Teacher of the Year Award. She's in her tenth year of teaching and is responsible for developing the "Reading Buddies" program for challenged students.

Bredemeier tells WGIL it's most satisfying when her former students return to the classroom.

"Especially for me, when I was in the classroom, when I hear that my kids who really struggled with reading at the beginning, and then they're on the honor roll in junior high, then I really feel like I've made a difference," she said. "And (I) have taught them the skills that are needed."

"And if they learn work ethic and work hard, and care, then that's what's going to take them places."

Chamber President Bob Maus says Bredemeier exemplifies excellence in the classroom.

He says she's a mentor that's admired by everyone, and enhances the skills of her students in a unique way.

Bredemeier grew up in Knoxville and double-majored in political science and elementary education at Knox College.
