Hy-Vee Discontinuing Ground Beef with Beef Additive
Hy-Vee is pulling the plug on a certain ground beef product line because of a loss of consumer confidence.

Ruth Comer is a spokesperson for Iowa-based Hy-Vee, Incorporated. She says last Thursday's decision to discontinue selling Lean Finely Textured Beef came at the request of customers.

Comer tells WGIL the beef additive meets USDA standards, and that Hy-Vee officials tried reassuring consumers the product wasn't as unhealthy as it was perceived.

"We believe in the quality of the product, and the integrity of the product, and that it's safe," she said. "Customers didn't really give us any specific doubts that they had in the product, other than that it didn't sound appetizing, I guess that's the best way to characterize it. And it wasn't something they wanted in their ground beef."

Comer says negative feedback from consumers came via phone, email, and facebook, all claiming they've lost confidence in the product.

She says Hy-Vee stores will continue to sell the LFTB ground beef they currently have, and new products, without the additive, will be available shortly.
