City Explains Grant Given to Gates
It's not the first time the City of Galesburg has utilized a grant program it's implemented in order to help local businesses.

In fact, it's just the first time this year that the city has given a $50,000 grant to Gates Corporation under its Employer Training Program that will help hire over 80 people in support of rubber hoses being manufactured once again at the plant.

The program has been in effect for several years, but City Economic Development Director Cesar Suarez says the city tries to not use the $100,000 budget whenever possible.

"We also try to use other funding sources as well," Suarez said. "The Workforce Investment Force has funding available as well and so we're going to try and see how we can work with them as well. But also we're going to work with other funding organizations so we can provide more funding for the project."

There were no projects awarded money in 2011, but Suarez says some money went to retraining initiatives at United Facilities and at Bridgeway in 2010.

The grant program provides a maximum of $50,000 per project. Suarez says that amounts to up to a $1,000 for every new job created, or $500 per every job retained.

City officials say having the grant program in place has already paid dividends.
