Yates City Officials Voice Zoning Frustrations to County Board
There's a home excavation business in Yates City that's creating a rift between them and the county.

City officials voiced their frustrations to the Knox County board Thursday night about an owner who continues to pile up equipment on his property. They say neighbors claim the value of their homes is depreciating because of it.

According to their mayor and city attorney, a judge's recent warning hasn't been enough. Assistant State's Attorney Erik Gibson tells WGIL a stricter resolution can be had once changes are made to the ordinance itself.

"The zoning ordinance that we work with is almost fifty years old, forty-five to fifty years old, and so therefore our remedies within that zoning ordinance are very limited," Gibson said. "We're currently in the process of trying to pass a new zoning resolution that is is more up to date and would better serve our purposes."

"And (it would) give us an appropriate new remedy to proceed with, and that's kinda where we're at right now."

What's more, the attorney for Yates City says the equipment continues to appear, despite a judge ruling the business is in violation of zoning.

Gibson says few to no issues have been found during inspections by the Zoning Board of Appeals.
