Cuts Made in District 205 as a "Wait and See" Attitude Continues
An annual list of staffing cuts has been made in the Galesburg School District, and the list is lower than in previous years, but might not stay that way.

The District-205 Board voted in a special meeting Thursday night to cut only 29 positions as part of its annual Reduction in Force list. While one teacher was cut due to a lack of required certification, most of the cuts came from support staff positions, and as is typical, many could be restored once grant funding or enrollment figures are better known.

District-205 Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Guy Cahill -- whose job was one of 138 retained -- tells WGIL the state could still end up owing the district a lot of money, but can fill that hole for now.

"We would administratively recommend that we eat into reserves to buy a years time to negotiate contracts, especially with our custodial maintenance staff, which has a re-opener this year, our cafeteria folk, which has a re-opener, and look at the other contracts," Cahill said.

Cahill seems to be backing off a claim made that the just-signed teachers contract may need to be re-opened, but that could still be a possibility.

The amount of money the district is owed could end up doubling, and the Illinois House just passed a budget yesterday that calls for virtually across-the-board cuts.
