Knox County Officials Consider Pay Increases
The Knox County Board's chairman doesn't want his board members to miss out this time around on a chance to increase their pay.

Greg Bacon says the board has the opportunity to re-configure their per-diems, and the chair's annual salary, once every ten years. But he says changes haven't been made since 1989.

Bacon supplied the board this week with documentation indicating Knox County was near the bottom in comparison to other counties similar in size. He's asking the board to take a long, hard look.

"I'm not envisioning anything over the top," Bacon said. "That's all up to the board. If you don't feel that...we can do it, that's totally cool. But I'd like to have input."

And the board did just that-- District-Two Republican Bill Abel says he's a board member for the opportunity to serve, and not for the money.

District-One Democrat Cheryl Nache agreed, saying she didn't even know there was pay when she got into serving and feels raising it wouldn't be fair to the board's constituents. However, democrats Paul Stewart and Lyle Johnson say a modest increase isn't unreasonable.

Board members currently take in $35 per meeting, while Bacon makes $4,120 yearly as chair. The board must make a decision by next month's board meeting.
