Galesburg Alderman to Speak at WIU Environmental Summit
There will be a local presence at a big environmental summit later this week.

Western Illinois University is hosting the 9th annual Environmental Summit from 9-3 Wednesday at WIU's Grand Ballroom in Macomb, and organizer Mindy Pheiffer says Knox College Professor and 7th Ward Alderman Peter Schwartzman will be the keynote speaker.

Pheiffer tells the WGIL Evening News the summit has gone beyond just talking about going green and energy sustainability.

"It was more of an environmental focus, but now as we're looking at sustainability, we're not just looking at the environmental impact, but how people and their impact on the environment make a big difference as well," Pheiffer said. "As we talk about Peter Schwartzman's involvement, that's definitely what his key area is, is looking at the human influence on the environment."

Pheiffer says Schwartzman is no stranger to the summit, having spoke in the second year.

The WIU Environmental Summit, in addition to Wednesday's gathering in Macomb, will also be held Tuesday at the WIU's Riverfront Campus in the Quad Cities.
