City Council Tables Zoning Change
The Galesburg City Council didn't take lightly a request by a local property owner to have his land re-zoned.

Aldermen debated for over a half-hour Monday night, and then tabled a request to change the zoning of 682 Harrison Street from B-1 to B-2, so that a storage facility could be built there.

A similar request for a different business was made and denied several months ago, and First Ward Alderman Ken Goad says he didn't like the change then, and won't now.

"I think it's a bad decision if it is re-zoned, the property line of the school is very close," Goad said. "And there's also, I talked to Mr. Gene Denisar, superintendent of schools, and he told me that the school district has applied for a $5 million dollar grant to add onto the building that is there, for the children."

"And if they get the grant, then they would be adding on to the property, which would push the property closer to the proposed development."

Goad is referring to the District-205 headquarters which also houses the Bright Futures program. The District is planning on expanding that building for a bigger pre-school if the grant is approved.

The district opposes the change.

Aldermen were concerned about zoning restrictions in general, and wondered if a new zoning class could be created or if some sort of middle ground could be reached.
