Teachers Union Blasts District-205
FIRST REPORTED 5:30am 3/6/12 The union representing Galesburg's teachers is taking aim once again at the District's Master Facilities Plan -- despite the fact that teachers have been involved in the plan's development all along.

The Galesburg Education Association's ire has been raised at District-205's possible budget-cutting plan, which would include re-opening their just-signed contract with the G-E-A.

Talk began last week of cuts after it was learned that 805-thousand dollars promised to the district by the state likely will never show up.

That would include the proposed elimination of the block schedule at Galesburg High School, though the union says teachers, parents, and students still support it.

The union says money from the Master Facilities Plan could be transferred to the district's operating funds if the district wants to. They say despite what the district has insinuated, "It is legal for the District to move money from one account to the other as long as the transaction is documented."

A sales tax increase for construction needs was approved by voters last year, and state law dictates the money raised only be used for capital purposes. The union accuses the district of being more willing to employ construction workers than teachers.

The GEA issued their statement Monday, days after attempts were unsuccessful by WGIL to contact the union for an interview.
