Knoxville Pushing for Oversized Garbage Pickup
Knoxville residents will soon be able to discard over-sized trash items on a case by case basis.

Alderman Monday night gave a proposed ordinance the initial green light that would allow for residents to have over-sized garbage removed from their home-- more than just the usual spring and fall pickup days.

Acting Mayor Bob Johnson says the ordinance must pass through the city council a second time before it becomes law. He tells WGIL the extra sanitation service will be a good thing because it's what many residents have wanted.

"The reason for this ordinance is that throughout the year, we have people call, and would like us to pick up like a washer or a dryer, or a couch or a mattresses or something," he said. "And so we felt throughout the year we could do this, and they would have to get a sticker."

Johnson says the sticker can be obtained at city hall for the price of $10 dollars.

He says the normal spring and fall pickup will not change, and over-sized trash pickup will still be provided on those two days at no charge.

In other news, First Ward Alderman Jim Eastwood issued his letter of resignation from council, effective Friday, because he's moving out of the ward.

And the city council also learned Monday night the Knoxville Public Library will need to be tuck-pointed before it can be power washed-- something alderman had intended to have done.

Johnson says that project could cost the city around $25,000 dollars, and hopes it can be completed in the summer.
