Kohl's Opening in Galesburg Pushed Back a Year
UPDATED 3:00pm 3/8/12 A retail chain that was expected to open up at Galesburg's Seminary Square Shopping Center later this year won't now because of issues with the soil.

City Economic Development Director Cesar Suarez tells WGIL Kohl's planned to break ground this month and open in the fall, but engineers discovered problems during their survey of the soil.

"The facility that they originally planned required more resources financially, as well as a re-design to make sure that the structure would be well suited there," he said. "They determined the soil to not be as compactful as they would like it to be."

Suarez says he can't specify how much more dollars Kohl's will have to inject into the project.

He says while Galesburg is notorious for rich and fertile soil that's good for agriculture, it's often prone to causing construction headaches. Suarez says he's not sure if the mild winter contributed to the weaker grounds.

According to Suarez, it's a setback to the opening of Kohl's. But he says in the fall of 2013, residents from all over Knox County will be able to benefit from their retail sales.
