Library Board Committee Revises Building Plan
The Galesburg Public Library Board is all but officially only choosing to build a new library instead of expanding the current space.

The board's Construction Committee Thursday went page-by-page through a 212 page building plan document first crafted in 2007 in order to revise and update it, and take out what board members consider to be unnecessary or extraneous material.

One of the first things the committee did is eliminate references to expanding the current East Simmons Street location, as the board is already looking at building new on the site of the former Super 8 on West Main Street.

Committee chair Mike Kroll says it should be up to another group to explain why that's being done.

"The evaluation of the building now, is relevant for a separate project," Kroll said. "That's relevant to our marketing and explaining to the community of why we need a new library."

"That isn't necessarily relevant to the plans of the new library, so that stuff can be re-used elsewhere."

The board also discussed at length meeting space, the Children's Department, and a foyer area where patrons could sit and relax without otherwise disrupting library operations.

The board hopes to have completed any recommended revisions in April.
