Knoxville Water Meters Need to be Replaced
Knoxville city officials are in the preliminary stages of figuring out how to go about replacing all of the city's water meters.

Engineer Kevan Cooper informed the city council earlier this week that 1,250 new meters will have to be purchased. Acting Mayor Bob Johnson tells WGIL the current ones are nearing expired use, and aren't being made anymore.

"Water meters are normally geared to last seven to ten years," Johnson said. "The problem is that the water meters that we have now...they're no longer making them or making the parts. So, we have about...60 water meters on hand, but after that, then we no longer have it."

Johnson says he and alderman will begin to explore specific grants or loans that may pay for the swap in water meters.

Because a payment source is unknown at this time, he says the timetable for replacing them is shaky. He says it's possible all of them can be changed out at once, but doing so in increments is an option as well.
