Schools React To Quinn Budget Proposal
In last Wednesday's "State of the Budget" address, Governor Pat Quinn outlined plans to cut 400-million dollars from education.

Schools have already been experiencing delayed payments from the state, but many districts around the Galesburg area have suggested they are running out of places to cut.

Elected representatives have suggested that Quinn is cutting down state education to fund Cook County programs.

Interim Superintendent for Finance and Operations Jim Rich tells WGIL the district is looking at all options.

"This district has made lots of cuts over the last few years actually probably ten years because we began reducing cost way back during my first term in this office. There isn't much more that could be cut other than personnel and 80% of our budget is personnel."

General estimates showed District 205 in Galesburg would receive about 3.3-million dollars less than last year.

In the newly consolidated Abingdon/Avon District 276, Board President Sherry Lomax tells WGIL they are trying to focus their attention on not relying so much on the state.

"Our feeling is we try to be as independent as we can and not rely solely on state funding. They've been so sporadic on paying their bills already, that we just have to watch what we spend and make sure that we have the money to spend in the bank."

Cuts would not go into effect until the state budget is adopted.
