Area Unemployment Rises
Unemployment rates for January largely increased in Knox County and the surrounding areas.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security released January's non-seasonally adjusted unemployment numbers.

Galesburg reported unemployment of 9.9 percent for January, a year-over-year increase from 9.3 percent reported a year ago.

Knox County as a whole fared slightly worse, reporting unemployment of 10.2 percent in January.

Over the course of the year, total non-farm payrolls in Galesburg remain unchanged with the manufacturing and financial sectors adding 250 jobs.

The government sector, however, reduced 100 jobs in the Galesburg area in addition to 75 retail trade positions.

Around the area, Henderson County reported unemployment of 9.7 percent, Henry saw 8.5 percent, McDonough County 9.3 percent, Mercer County 11.6 and Warren County 8.9 percent.

IDES Director Jay Rowell says that the department expected an increase in January, but will now turn their attention to the effect of the sequester.

Unemployment increased in seven of 12 metro areas year-over-year in Illinois according to the preliminary data.
