| Mold Confirmed In Silas Willard |
Tests conducted this afternoon by a Peoria area firm concluded that mold was located in Silas WIllard Elementary school. In the preliminary tests, mold spores were found present, but District 205 did not disclose that information. WGIL reported earlier today that mold was not found present in the school, but that turned out not to be the case. Interim Superintendent for Finance and Operations Jim Rich tells WGIL they were aware mold spores had been found yesterday.
"The original test that was given [the tester] said was completely insignificant," says Rich. "Only one test was given and an outdoor test wasn't taken but the mold is everywhere and it's been on earth from the beginning."
The fifth grade class at Silas Willard has been moved to a different building until the problem can be taken care of. Air-quality tests were conducted after a teacher complained of an increase in headaches and allergy symptoms. Rich tells WGIL they were told there is mold everywhere.
"Possible mold causes that would be in a building always come from some water source, for example a leaking roof," says Rich. "Since Silas Willard has a new roof on it there are other ways that water could get into a building that might cause mold."
Questions on whether mold has ever been found at Silas remain unanswered as WGIL reported that mold has never been found in the past. Rich says that he believes it has been found at the school. 15 different locations in the school are scheduled for testing. |
