Celebrating a 100 Years of Ag Education
Galesburg High School is rolling out the red carpet and celebrating a milestone in their educational history.

The GHS Agricultural Program turns a hundred this month.

Ag Advisor at GHS Corrine Smith tells the WGIL Midday the program started at the beginning of the 1912-1913 school year and was really ahead of the game when it came to Ag education programs.

"This is before the Smith-Hughes act even started vocational classes in high school. And from what I understand students were bused in like they are in the vocational program now, students can to our high school to talk Ag because the surrounding schools didn't have the programs. So it's kind of a neat deal that we've been able to keep it going for a 100 years straight."

Smith says the program is holding strong and gets a lot of interest every year with around 120 students enrolled per year.

In honor of National Agricultural day on March 19 and in celebration of a 100 years of Ag education at GHS there will be a family farm night at the high school.

Smith says they'll have a petting zoo, an Alumni Booth and a cake walk.

She says they're not sure if the event will be inside or out, depending on the weather, but it will be at the High School.
