| Bowl For Kids Sake Raises Funds |
Saturday's fundraiser for Big Brothers/Big Sisters at Northgate lanes raised money all while having some fun. The Galesburg Chapter of the national not-for-profit held their annual "Bowl for kids sake" event yesterday afternoon in an attempt to raise some of their annual revenue. About 150 people signed up in total for the event which raises about 25-thousand dollars each year for the agency. Case Manager Erica Bell tells WGIL that they serve kids with a variety of backgrounds, but most often come from single parent or low income households.
"They may have an incarcerated parent or be struggling with behavior issues," says Bell. "Our matches get together a couple times a month and go out and have a good time."
The group saw both "bigs" and "littles," as they're called, wear white shirts and bowl in teams on Saturday. Bell tells WGIL that Big Brothers/Big Sisters is funded almost soley through donations.
"The money we raise [Saturday] goes to support us throughout the rest of the year," says Bell. "A lot of the money goes to support intense case management with all of our matches we speak with them and visit them on a monthly basis to monitor the matches." Prizes and gift bags were given out with some Big Brothers/Big Sisters jackets given out to the biggest fundraisers. The money raised supports the case management for the agency as well as assist with operational costs. The Galesburg chapter currently has 30 matches, but says they always have more kids than adult volunteers. |
