Ground Broken On New Galesburg Water Plant

18-million dollars in upgrades to the City of Galesburg's water system have officially begun.

Members of the Galesburg City Council got off a van they took to get to the site several miles south of Oquawka along the Mississippi River Tuesday, they broke ground, and left. But now the site and utility work will begin ahead of the actual construction of the plant.

Galesburg Public Works Director Larry Cox says the main benefit of the new plant will be that water can be treated in Oquawka, before it ever gets to Galesburg.

Cox says the current filters are pretty much at the end of their useful life, and city leaders say by filtering water in Oquawka, more communities could be interested in tapping into the system and purchasing their water from Galesburg. Construction on the plant is expected to be done in under two years, weather permitting.
