| District 217 Seats Newly Elected School Board Members |
The Abingdon School District didn't waste any time getting its newest school board member to work. Dennis DeCrane took the oath of office from board president Jim Bloomberg at Wednesday night's school board meeting. DeCrane ran unopposed for his seat on the board and replaces Todd Thompson, who declined to seek another term and opted instead to run for road commissioner in Indian Point Township. Thompson easily defeated his opponent in that race on Tuesday. DeCrane joins two incumbent school board members who also ran unopposed - former teacher Ray Archer and farmer Jeff Emerick. DeCrane tells WGIL he has experience serving in the community and felt the time was right to give the school board a shot.
"I've been in town (Abingdon) for 33 years and I've done church board and that kind of thing and just wanted to branch out."
DeCrane, a local car salesman, says there's no one school district issue in particular he feels especially strong about, adding that he's "open to everything." DeCrane says he has management experience that he can contribute to the board. In other business, board members approved the summer driver's education program that will be open to 20 students. The board with a 6-1 vote approved the 2009-2010 school calendar. Students will start on August 19th. Board member Roger Schrodt cast the only no vote, saying he thinks school starts a week too early.
