| Health Department Needs Disaster Drill Volunteers |
The Knox County Health Department needs the community's help in a planned drill later this year. The Knox County Board of Health at their meeting Thursday night said they will be operating a mass dispensing exercise in June which is a practice drill, passing out medications to community members in the case of an area emergency.
Jane Danielson, Emergency Preparedness Coordinator for the health department, says many different types of people, as well as those of different age groups, can volunteer for the drill. "We want to see how well we work with special needs-type people," Danielson said. "We want to see how we work with families, with children, how well the nurses can computate or figure out what dosage of medications the kids are supposed to get ain a quick setting."
Danielson says the goal of the overall project would be dispensing medication to those who need it in Knox County in 36 hours or less in the event of an emergency. Besides Galesburg High School, she says they have been looking at senior centers or community buildings or large employers to also dispense the medications.
Each participant will receive an "actor" card and be requested to walk through a POD, or point of dispensing, to receive mock medication in the form of candy.
