Soangetaha Road Bridge Could Receive Millions in Federal Budget
A project Galesburg City Manager Dane Bragg says administrators have been trying to get funded for years gets another try thanks to a local Congressman.

The list of earmarks Congressman Phil Hare has submitted for the Fiscal Year 2010 budget includes $2.5 million for a brand new Soangetaha Road Bridge over the Burlington-Northern Santa Fe Railroad Tracks.

Bragg tells WGIL the project is important not only for those who travel in that area, it's just as important for emergency personnel. "It's a timber span bridge, and it does not have sufficient capacity for us to use our newer fire equipment, because it's too heavy," Bragg said. "That bridge accesses about 90 homes and Soangetaga Country Club."

Bragg tells WGIL as it stands right now, the bridge is on a bit of life supports thanks to BNSF. "The timber spans are deteriorated, and there are a couple of steel spans on the bridge that have deteriorated as well," Bragg said. "(BNSF has) made temporary improvements to that bridge for the time being, but knowing that it is a bridge that is going to have to be replaced in the near term."

Bragg says if the funding were approved, construction of a new bridge would start in about a year once design and other work were done.

The proposed railroad overpass on North Seminary Street is included in nearly $9 million in Galesburg-related projects. For more on Hare's requested earmarks, CLICK HERE (PDF document).
