| Exchange Club Announces Youth of the Month for March |
The Exchange Club of Galesburg's March Youth-of-the-Month is Ting Chen. She is the daughter of Fenchen and Liming Song Chen, 664 N. Cedar St.
Ting is a senior at Galesburg High School where she has a perfect 4.00 grade point average. She is a principal's scholar, in the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society.
She plans to join her brother and continue her education as a pre-med student at the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign.
Ting is one of six Youths-of-the-Month who will be eligible to compete for the prestigious Galesburg Exchange Club Youth-of-the-Year award which will be announced at a special banquet this month. The program honors outstanding students who have exhibited excellence in academics and leadership. As part of their recognition, winners write an essay on the topic, America's youth - stepping forward to change the beat of America.
The winner there goes on to compete for the Lincolnland District Youth-of-the-Year honor and potentially national recognition and increasingly larger scholarships.
The Exchange Club is a group of men and women from the area who meet every Friday at noon at the Kensington to hear an informative program. They have been involved since their founding in 1924 with a variety of community service projects; it's Exchangites who pass out flags before local parades, honor a Youth-of-the-Month and Youth-of-the-Year during the school year, recognize worthy law enforcement officers, firefighters and contribute funds from the club's youth foundation to a variety of local organizations. Guests and new members are always welcome.
