Environmental Group Thrilled With Midwest High Speed Rail Stimulus
The Environmental Law and Policy Center says it's "doing handsprings" over the $8 billion in federal stimulus money to be used for high speed rail. ELPC deputy director Kevin Brubaker, who is the point man for the group's high speed rail efforts, says he thinks the Chicago-to-St. Louis route is in a prime position to win some of the $2 billion that's reportedly targeted for the Midwest.

He says high-speed trains will eventually run at about 110 miles per hour in a hub-and-spoke network from Chicago to St. Louis, Cleveland, Detroit, Milwaukee, Madison and Minneapolis-St. Paul. Brubaker says Illinois and other Midwestern states have "shovel-ready" projects, but still must make sure the paper work is ready for approval and that political will swings toward the Midwest.

High speed rail is expected to cut down a Chicago-to-St. Louis train trip from close to six hours, to lees than four.
