Monmouth Forms Census Committee
One area city has formed a group in order to get information out to community members about the importance of being counted in the next census.

The Monmouth City Council recently formed the "Complete Count Committee" made up of Monmouth residents belonging to religious groups, service clubs, and government agencies and was formed to tell people about the importance of getting a good, complete and accurate count during the census counting process.

Monmouth Mayor Rod Davies says information taken from the count is sometimes used in determining grants the city may receive. Davies tells WGIL it's important to get an accurate count in order to be eligible for as much grant funding as they can get. "Sometimes those (grants) are based on population," Davies said. "For example, the year's (budget) earmarks -- some of those were based on that data. So, in order to make sure we get our fair share of revenues for different programs, it's important to have accurate population data."

Davies says some of the grants where population is taken into account include a transportation grant from the federal stimulus package, and a community development grant the city applied for that would enable the city to start the restoration of water mains on South Main Street.
