Fire Destroys Rural Knox County Home -- E-MAIL US YOUR PHOTOS AND ACCOUNTS OF THE FIRE
POSTED 7:18am, UPDATED 10:28am 4/13/09 A home in rural Knox County is considered a total loss following a fire late Sunday morning.

The Knox County Sheriffs Department says they and Oneida/Wataga firefighters were first called to the blaze at 2950 Knox County Highway 3, northwest of Altona and near the Knox/Henry County Line, 10:15 Sunday morning. There, they say they immediately saw flames shooting through the home's roof.

Mutual aid was immediately called, bringing in crews from Rio and Victoria, and Oxford and Clover townships, but not before the home's roof collapsed.

Deputies say the home's owners, Byron and Lisa Schafer, were not home at the time the fire was reported.

The home is believed to be a total loss. It's not clear how long crews were on the scene putting the fire out.

The Sheriffs Department and the Illinois State Fire Marshall's office are continuing an investigation so that a cause can be determined.
