Site of Fatal NIU Shooting Still Has Uncertain Future
More than a year after the shootings at Northern Illinois University, the school's president still struggles with day-to-day needs as well as with solving the long-term future of Cole Hall, the classroom building where the shootings occurred.

President John Peters told an Illinois House appropriations committee there has been no state money forwarded to renovate Cole, what Peters calls a "shovel-ready project." Five students died, and 18 were injured, on Valentine's Day of last year.

Peters said the federal government provided $2.6 million, but in addition to that, NIU has spent about $4.5 million on such needs as security, communications, logistics and mental health services.

Peters touted his university as a great place for students from working-class families to get an education, whether it's as an incoming freshman or community college transfer. He says an increasing proportion of the new students are from the southern two-thirds of Illinois.
