Still No Crop Planting Going On
Continuing cool, wet conditions are continuing to hamper Illinois farmers' attempts to get the planting season under way. The United States Department of Agriculture says most of them are waiting for temperatures to warm up and fields to dry out before they get going.

Last week saw an average temperature around 42.6 degrees, which is six degrees below normal. The state also saw about 1.38 inches of precipitation, which is 0.34 inches above normal. There was only one day out of seven that was suitable for field work, and only 32 percent of topsoil in the state had an "adequate" amount of moisture. The remaining 68 percent had too much.

The USDA's Brad Schwab says some corn has been planted in Southern Illinois, but those plantings weren't enough to constitute 1 percent of the total amount of corn expected to be planted this year. The normal amount by this time of year is around 7 percent. The oat crop is now 35 percent planted, compared to 12 percent last year and 48 percent for the five-year average.
