Galesburg School Board Votes on Alternative School Proposal Tuesday Night
The Galesburg School Board Tuesday evening will determine whether the better part of two year's worth of research and other work will result in a new opportunity for some of the district's students.

The District-205 Board will vote Tuesday night on whether or not to officially form an alternative school. District officials say one had been in operation in the district until about a decade ago when students were sent to the Knox County Academy.

While it's still possible students expelled from District-205 may be sent to the academy, the alternative school would focus on students dropping out from Galesburg High School.

A committee led by alternative school director Wes Olson has been researching the possibilities for the past year or so, after a feasibility study determined an alternative school would be possible again. Olson and others have been visiting other alternative schools, researching teaching and testing models, and doing other work ahead of their final presentation to the school board Tuesday Night. If approved, an alternative school would locate in the former Rose Hoben Welch School building, and could start as soon as fall.

The Galesburg School Board Tuesdsay night will also approve a new bid for the district's school bus needs. The district has been working with First Student, formerly Laidlaw, for the past five years, and district officials say only one bid was received for the new deal.

The District-205 Board meets at 7pm Tuesday in their board room at Lincoln School.
