Federal Economic Stimulus Money For Illinois Schools
Illinois is getting its hands on $3 billion in federal funds for schools.

The money comes from the federal stimulus program. Two billion will go to the new State Fiscal Stabilization Fund, so that school districts don't see their funding drop in tough economic times. U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan says this will save teaching jobs - hundreds of thousands nationally - as well as other positions such as librarians and social workers, at a time when it would be unwise to compromise education.

The other billion of the federal money will be used to support schools with high-poverty enrollments and special education programs.

The money comes with strings attached: Reform is required, regarding teacher quality, standards, student improvement and college readiness.

Some will be used to make state payments to school districts in May and June, the final two months of the current state fiscal year. In addition to the federal funds, Gov. Pat Quinn has proposed an increase of $147 million in state funds for schools in next year's budget.
