GOP Wants State Budget Cuts
Republicans on the state Senate Deficit Reduction committee are rejecting the notion that lawmakers must raise taxes to get out of the state's current budget deficit. In their report, which was released about a week late, some Republicans senators outlined their individual ideas on how to cut spending to save the state around $3.4 billion per year.

The report suggests cutting Medicaid, some state programs, and revising higher education funding, among other things. However, it doesn't specifically outline what state programs to cut, other than to say there are more than 1,700 programs that should be examined.

The senators contend that the majority of Illinois citizens want lawmakers to get the budget under control without raising taxes. They say it's possible to get the budget under control without raising taxes, but it will take extreme belt tightening, some painful cuts, and it could take a few years. They say that's okay because it took the state years to get to this point, and it’s going to take years to get out of it.
