Time to File Your Taxes!
Officials with the Internal Revenue Service say it's okay if you've waited until this close to the deadline to file your income tax returns, because you're not alone -- but they also say you can't afford to wait much longer to file something.

IRS Spokeswoman Sue Hales says as many as 1.8 million Illinoisans wait until the week leading up to April 15th to file their taxes, and another 300,000 or so will get enough together to file an extension.

Hales tells WGIL you really shouldn't wait until THE absolute last minute to file, because you really need to take some time to make sure everything is right. "Start now, get everything together, get your return prepared as soon as possible, so that you have time to set it aside for awhile, then come back fresh, go over everything on the tax return, make sure that all the inputs are correct, nothing was transposed, all social security numbers are correct," Hales said.

Hales says that includes making sure you have everything together that you need to attach to your paper return if that's the route you chose to go versus filing electronically.

She says filing electronically, though, will still get you any refund you may anticipate getting much quicker.

Tax returns must be filed and postmarked by midnight Wednesday night.
