Maple City Candy Company, Coconuts Restaurant Closing
A local candy store that's been in business in its current location for more than a decade will be closing its doors early next month.

The Maple City Candy Company and Coconuts restaurant in Monmouth will be shutting down due to what the owners cite as project estimates of remodeling, a sagging economy, and a change in owner priorities.

In a release issued Wednesday to WGIL, John Kesinger, co-owner of the Maple City Candy Company, said the decision to close comes with great deliberation and sadness. He says many of the 15 employees at Maple City Candy were notified on Monday about the decision to close the business. Several of the workers have been offered positions at the Button House in Aledo, a business similar to the Maple City Candy Company also owned by the Kesingers.

The adjoining restaurant, Coconuts, will close on May 3rd and the Candy Company will remain open until liquidation or the transfer of inventory and equipment is complete.

John and Diane Kesinger relocated the store to Monmouth in 1994 and have expanded the store several times over the years. The tropical-themed restaurant Coconuts opened in 2002.

John Kesinger says Maple City Candy has become, in his words, a tradition to a lot of children and parents, and that loss deeply saddens the owners. But the Kessingers say an the attempt to commit to both of the locations (Monmouth and Aledo) has put a great demand on their time and resources.
