Environmentalists See State Budget as Part Green
Environmentalists see benefits for Illinois in next year's federal budget.

Among the expected benefits are $90 million to upgrade 90 deficient sewage treatment plants, and $17.2 billion over 10 years to clean up six toxic waste sites, and 18 businesses identified as potential beneficiaries from investment in renewable energy.

Also included among environmental benefits, though much more prospective, is $27.4 billion Illinois would realize over 10 years if polluters are required to pay for global warming emissions, and $1.5 billion that Illinois taxpayers would no longer contribute in subsidies to oil companies.

Budgets have been passed by both the U.S. House and Senate with these provisions proposed by the president intact, but in negotiations to reconcile other differences, programs could be diminished or deleted.
