Sandburg Birthplace Preparing to Reopen
A number of employees will be retiring to their jobs next week after lawmakers recently approved the money needed to reopen state historic sites.

Norm Winick, President of the Carl Sandburg Historic Site Association says all four laid-off employees will return to work on April 22nd with a job currently posted, looking for a maintenance person and tour guide. Winick says it's all good news in terms of getting the site ready to reopen

Winick tells WGIL there's a lot to do in order to reopen the Sandburg site. "Because the sites have been closed for awhile, there's a lot of catch-up maintenance that needs to be done, the normal springtime stuff, as well as making sure it's ready, and Bishop Hill is ready, to receive tourists," Winick said.

Winick says the Carl Sandburg site still doesn't have a superintendent as Steve Holden, who most recently held the position, retired when ex-Governor Rob Blagojevich shut down historic sites across the state due to a budget deficit. He says the Bishop Hill superintendent was willing to watch over the Carl Sandburg Site as well.

Winick does say that even though the Carl Sandburg Site won't officially be open, all the events scheduled for the Carl Sandburg Days "Festival for the Mind" will still take place on the site grounds which he called is a treasure trove of resources both artistically and culturally for the community.
