Orpheum Theatre Not Pulling Plug on Red Carpet Series
A performance series hosted by Galesburg's Orpheum Theatre likely will survive after all, but the theatre's president says it may not do so in its current form.

Orpheum President Kate Francis told the Knox County Civic Center Authority Board this week the theatre is currently 500 away from its goal of selling 2,000 tickets for is spring "Red Carpet Series" season. Francis says with two performances to go, including "The Lowe Family" this afternoon and evening, she says reaching the goal is "doable."

But Francis tells WGIL that doesn't mean it isn't the time to consider looking at a different way of presenting the series in the future. "The Board would like to see programs funded before they're programmed," Francis said. "With the Red Carpet Series, we typically have to sign contracts well, well in advance before we start stomping on the ground to try to drum up some contributions and sponsorships. We're hoping we can, maybe, change that approach. So, the Board is committed to maintaining some programming, but it may not be exactly in the same format as we've seen before."

Francis says that may include less nationally-known acts and more regional acts, in addition to cutting the number of overall "Red Carpet Series" performances from nine now to five between September of 2009 and May of 2010.

Either way, she says plans are still extremely tentative, and that ending the series or giving it a year off are NOT options at this point.
