Young Designers in Springfield Today
Two New York fashion designers are in Springfield today to help hand out awards to high school-age designers. A competition called "Runway Project" was held as part of an extensive list of contests and training for the Illinois Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). The design contest judged the works of more than 30 students from across the state, who had a budget of $50 and had to design and make a garment out of recycled materials.

The big cheers came when Project Runway Season Five contestants Wesley Nault and Daniel Feld took the state to hand out the awards. The two now have a fashion design house in New York City. Asked if the winners could be a threat to their success, they said, "Yeah, we'd better keep an eye out."

The winners were:

1st--Gabby Davis, freshman, Dwight Township High School, who made a kimono out of 60 men's silk ties

2nd--Tori Hohgrefe, senior, Trico High School, Campbell, who made a denim jacket out of the old blue jeans

3rd--Stefanie James, Reed-Custer High School, Braidwood, who made a satin dress.

Each winner will receive a new sewing machine.
