Illinois Gas Prices Up in April, But Well Below Year-Ago Numbers
Gasoline is more expensive in Illinois, but only by a little.

The average gasoline price in Illinois for April is $2.11, according to the Triple-A Chicago Motor Club. That's a 10-cent increase from March. An increase this time of year is usual, says Triple-A spokeswoman Nicole Niemi, due to the switch from winter to summer-grade fuel. The price of crude oil also has risen, closing Monday at $47.76. Last month, it was in the $42 range.

However, the current price is significantly lower than it was in April 2008. Last year at this time the price was $3.45. Niemi says she hopes that the 10-cent increase experienced this month comes to be considered the norm, rather than the big spring increases of recent years.

Locally, gas prices are below the state avereage at about $2.02 a gallon at many locations.
