IL Atty. Gen. Concerned About Toy Recalls
Recalls of children's products continued at a brisk pace in 2008, according to a report by the Illinois-based group Kids in Danger.

Total recalls for juvenile products in 2008 were 190, accounting for more than 18 million units, according to data the group compiled from the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan says recalls are often ineffective, in terms of getting the customers to return the recalled product, and this is particularly a problem with cribs and bassinets, because this is where parents leave small children unattended for hours.

U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston) is demanding that marketers and the Consumer Product Safety Commission make a greater effort to recall faulty products. She says buyers should fill out and return a post card with their contact information when they buy juvenile products so they can be personally notified if there is a recall.

Kids in Danger says a further problem with recalls is that juvenile products such as cribs, strollers and play pens are often used for several children, passed on to cousins, and sold on the secondary market (re-sale shops, garage sales and Craigslist and E-Bay).

Schakowsky is also calling for the replacement of the chairman of the commission, who has indicated she is no longer interested in the job. Madigan says Kids in Danger director Nancy Cowles would be a good choice as either chairman or a commission member.
