Governor Marks Earth Day
Gov. Pat Quinn signed an executive order Wednesday that requires state government agencies and the governor's mansion to waste less and conserve more. Quinn says the order is a big part of the state's overall goal to go green. It requires agencies to cut solid waste by 40 percent by 2015, and by 2025, the governor expects them to cut electricity and natural gas use by 25 percent.

The governor's mansion has been equipped with 122 energy efficient LED bulbs this week, which Quinn says can last up to 50,000 hours. He also says the mansion staff intends to use rain barrels to collect gardening water.

As with many things in state government these days, there's also a saving factor involved with this initiative. Quinn says saving energy saves the state, and the taxpayers, money in the long run.

In the future, Quinn says he hopes to dabble in solar power, and has entertained using it to provide the electricity needed for a myriad of things, including plug-in hybrid cars, coin laundries, schools, etc.
