LOCAL NEWS FIRST: Fire Destroys Garage in Knoxville
POSTED 7:11pm 4/23/09 A garage in Knoxville is pretty well damaged following a late-afternoon fire Thursday.

Knoxville Assistant Fire Chief Chris Mallery says his crews, along with some from Gilson and Appleton, were called to a two-story garage located in the 200 block of Market Street, for the house at 202 Locust Street around 4:25 pm.

The fire was out in less than an hour, but Mallery tells WGIL it was a pretty tricky one to fight. "(There were) a couple of L.P. tanks inside (the garage) that we were concerned about," Mallery said. "We got those watered down and pulled out. The wind was a little bit of a factor. Fortunately, there were no structures close to this one. That's a main concern, always, if there's a structure close. There were no vehicles or other structures, so you just get this one knocked down. We got it done."

The garage was roughly 20 yards away from the home. Mallery says the resident there wasn't home at the time the fire broke out, but he is believed to have started a burn pile in the area that set the garage on fire.

No one was hurt. Mallery says roughly two-dozen of his firefighters were on scene at one point helping knock the fire down.
