Area Children All Smiles At Fun Fair
The Hawthorne Center Gymnasium, inside and out, was the place for children to be on Saturday.

Youngsters and their families were invited to the facility for dozens of activities like riding horses, planting marigolds, sampling trail mix and making books. The Network for the Young Child's annual Fun Fair was the culmination of the Week of the Young Child, which was observed in the United States all last week.

Knox County Area Project Director Rhonda Brady tells WGIL there were more than 20 booths set up to accommodate hundreds of children, all free of charge.

"We have students from Knox College here assisting with different booths (and) we have students from Carl Sandburg College here putting on booths. It's just a community effort of all kinds - police department, fire department..."

Other participants included the Knox County Health Department, the U-of-I Knox County Extension Office, the American Red Cross, Bright Futures, Safe Harbor and many others. Brady says the Network for the Young Child works to plan the fair every year.

The observance of the Week of the Young Child stepped off locally on Monday with a parade. The idea behind the initiative is to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.

The Week of the Young Child will be held April 10th through the 17th next year.
