Public Health Officals Stay Ahead of Swine Flu
Before any cases of swine flu were confirmed in Illinois, the directors of the public health and emergency management offices in the state said they wanted to assure the public not to panic.

Public health director Dr. Damon Arnold told a Statehouse news conference none of the people complaining of flu-like symptoms over the weekend in Illinois were found to have swine flu. Arnold says a difficulty in keeping fluids down, as well as the symptoms getting much worse after improving briefly, can indicate swine flu. Otherwise, the initial symptoms seem pretty much the same as the regular flu.

Arnold adds last fall's flu shot will not prevent swine flu, though there will be plenty of medicine available to treat swine flu in Illinois.

Arnold's emergency management counterpart, Andrew Velasquez, says the state's emergency operations center is staffed round-the-clock.
