| CSC Board Approves New Certificate for Cardiac Scans; New Board Officers Elected |
The need for people who can work in a specialized medical field is increasing, and that's leading to the addition of a certificate program at Carl Sandburg College.
The CSC Board of Trustees Tuesday night voted to approve the creation of a certificate for Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography, pending approval by the Illinois Community College Board, that could become available starting in the fall.
CSC Dean of Allied Health Programs, Lori Wiechmann, tells WGIL the program is similar, but different, to one already offered on campus. "The Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program is what your typical ultrasound technologist is -- what the typical lay person would understand," Wiechmann said. "The Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography Program really will look at the cardiovascular system -- so the heart, and all the vascularity that goes with it. So, in some respects, it's an extension. But we're looking at two different portions of the body with the technologies."
Wiechmann says the need for the program was brought to the college's attention by area hospitals, who say they, as with other medical fields, are suffering from shortages in people capable of performing such ultrasound exams, and that's expected to increase over the next five years.
The CSC board Tuesday night also reorganized following the April election, with oaths of office administered to Bruce Lauerman and others elected. John Sibley, Senior was elected as the new board chairperson, with Mike Bavery picked as Vice-Chair, and Gayla Pacheco as Secretary. |
