Swine Flu Count in Illinois Up to 9 -- TIPS AND LOCAL INFORMATION HERE
Illinois now has nine probable cases of swine flu.

The number comes from the Illinois Department of Public Health, where the director, Dr. Damon Arnold, says this is not a number that warrants panic, since nationally, seasonal flu kills 30,000 people every year. In Illinois, swine flu has neither killed nor hospitalized anyone; the nine cases are described as mild.

Arnold says the likelihood of each probable case being confirmed as swine flu is 99 percent, based on preliminary tests. Specimens have been sent to the Centers for Disease Control, which will make a final determination in the next day or two.

Of the nine cases, five are in Chicago, two are in Kane County, one in DuPage County and one in Lake County. The patients range in age from 2 to 57.

County health departments are now getting flu medicine from the federal stockpile. The state is offering advice on preventing the spread of swine flu by CLICKING HERE.
