Illinois Ups Number of Swine Flu Cases; State Receives Drugs From National Stockpile -- LOCAL TIPS HERE
The number of swine flu cases in Illinois has reached 17. That number is up from nine on Wednesday and zero on Tuesday. The Department of Public Health characterizes the cases as mild. There are eight cases of swine flu in Cook County, six in Kane County, and one each in DuPage, Lake and McHenry counties.

The state has received drugs from the strategic national stockpile, just in case there's a huge outbreak and pharmacies run out, says Public Health spokeswoman Melaney Arnold. The stockpile has provided 376,000 courses of the anti-virus drugs Tamiflu and Relenza to be used around Illinois except in Chicago, which gets its own allocation from the federal government. This combines with 650,000 courses already accumulated by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Patients with the flu will get drugs through their local pharmacy. The stockpiles being delivered to local health department are in case the outbreak is so severe that thousands of courses of drugs are needed and pharmacies run out.
